How to start your own server

Posted by Happy, 26 August 2015 · 1291 views

If you're here to start a new server here are what you are not supposed to do.

1. Think you already know everything
2. Hire a developer for things you do not know.
3. Hire a developer for everything while you do not have time for your own skill development only to find out that you can't handle being an owner of a server.

What you're really supposed to do, and if you are really serious about creating your own server is:

1. Get a mentor
2. Start learning according to your mentor's guidance.
3. Only hire a developer for things you already know and bored to do. This way you can focus your time on things you haven't learned yet, and be able to grow more as a developer/server owner.

If you only depend on hired developers, you might end up in a future where in all of them are busy, and your server is a mess and you don't know how the hell you will fix it, because all of your server's life, you've been just handing tasks you didn't know how to make yourself, therefore you have no idea how to make a repair.

I just leave this message here.

What will attract mostly (Current) players of Ragnarok as well as new players to a RO server?

easy, setup a really shit server and have no clue about what you are doing, then you are destined for 2000 players.
but be careful, any kind of professionalism in your setup, you are lucky to get 200 players

good luck :)

Or that too! LOL

Want some fish?

Nice post m8, i agree with you in some points.

From my experience, you don't have to know  everything in order to make a server.
In my case, i'm good hexing/making clients and making advertising/marketing. Also, i'm the one who spend his money in order to make it works
Of course i know how to script some kind of npcs but not enough to make a new BG or a whole system.
I never had problems with my coders and i paid them monthly for their support. The real problem came after 3 servers (in 2 years) i wanted to make a new Server but they were "busy" so i was like "ok, np," and then one of them told me "don't use my scripts/codes please".
I was like WTF, it wasn't free, i paid for the codes/scripts and they coded MY IDEAS, therefore, i'm the owner.
Anyway, i started to learn basic things like how to setup the server (yeah, i don't really know how to build the SQL DB and those things lol) but i'm pretty sure that i will buy codes/scripts here or rathena in order to add new features.

My servers were:
VortexRO: 600 on, 10/10/10
Vortex 2: 400 on 10/10/10/
InfinityRO: 350 25/25/15

Thank you for the comment. You have a point, in the end it's a matter of what you are willing to risk and how you'll handle the challenges along the way.

Pretty sure you made some good choices hence your paid devs aren't stealing your files or locking you out xD hopefully. Someone just pmed me the other day that one of the devs he hired locked him out of his own server LOL.

Is it okay if I chat you on skype and tell me a bit more about your experiences ? :) I'm always eager to learn more through other's experience

Actually that is the hardest part, find honest coders. But that is why you pay them, you know, if they win money with your work they will take care of it.

Of course! Skype: explosive_hyp
