How do you feel about your free releases/RO content?

Recommended Posts

I know this is random but it kind of upsets me that I got 129 downloads in one day on my Zombie Massacre instance I created and didn't get a single rep/comment or even a thanks.

The way I feel about my content is that it's special, I put lots of effort and creativity to make it feel official and nice. One day we all will pass on, and everything we keep to ourselves will be forgotten because it'll never be known/released.

Meaning basically I feel nice a lot because it saddens me that if something were to occur and I passed away, that all my work I've done will sit in a hard drive that'll be thrown away or stashed away forever, like I didn't even write the code.

That's how I feel about my free releases, I bring you guys personal content from my mind, in thoughts I might leave earth one day and at least want to see a couple thank you's,

So on topic, how do you feel about your personal content/free releases?

That is kind of common, i once had a pretty interesting project with a good friend of mine that allowed to play God Eater on PSP via internet together.

As soon as we released it we had about 3000 downloads per day but noone cared to leave a message / register to the board to say something about that.

Sadly many people are leechers that just pop up if something is not working out for them.

But if you passed away sadly it wouldn't matter at all at a great run. If we say that the complete timeframe the world exists in is only a second compared to the time the universe exists a human live is basically nothing. Even if people kept you in their history it would get lost sooner or later.

I would say thinking about it that way is just a bit too emotional and dark, especially given that you only released it today and people are still testing it out. I can see why you got frustrated but maybe some will come back to give you feedback about it. Also keep in mind while 129 may seem a lot, it actually isn't.

Only a fragment actually will respond to it. That is part of why people on youtube beg for upvotes for example, because people that agree / like something tend to be silent, while people that disagree / dislike are pretty loud about it.

I guess i was kinda off topic. Personally i do free releases when i have developed something i find interesting and don't know what to do with it afterwards. I release it free to give something back to the community and hope it helps someone out. It is nice if there is something coming back, but i wouldn't use it to boost my self confidence. I use it to grow as a person and learn some new stuff from the feedback and ideas some people come up with.

Did that happen to be Prometheus? You were a developer on that @@Winterfox?

If so just so you know I loved your work, FF Dissidia was an awesome experience :P

And I guess 129 isn't a lot, but I was just hoping for some feedback and comments :/ especially since it's around Halloween and I felt this instance was a perfect choice to release in October.

Don't compare the download count with comment count, many of downloads are made with randoms, people without any sense of server creation, and leechers, only true members comment, report bugs (if exists) and drop sugestions.

I don't download scrips because It isn't my focus.

You're talking about legacy, not your contributions.

Well personally, I don't think contributions alone will define your legacy, there has to be some sort of a relationship. You will be remembered by people whose lives were touched, it means it has to be something really special that no one can ever give or something that has changed their life for the better.  ^_^

It was the predecessor of the Prometheus Project that Coldbird made. It was when GE was pretty new and it only supported this game.

But it part of gave Coldbird the idea to broaden the approach i think. I wasn't a dev directly on the software, but worked on stuff around it, basically the community and website i had was used as the plattform to promote it.

I am a close friend of Coldbird, so i'll let him know that you love his work, i think that will make him happy to hear.

If you are interested you could check out his current stuff here: http://www.coldbird.net/

I am involved with the Sound Nexus thing so if you have any suggestions about that you could write me a PM.

Or maybe most of the people who already downloaded it doesn't have time to test it (im one of them). Or some of them just want to compare your work on what they already have? Thanks for sharing this btw. I'll test this on weekend.

Plenty of people download releases just to read the text file and see how you wrote something, with no intention to ever load the actual script itself.

I wouldn't get too worked up over it, keep releasing good content and you will be acknowledged.

Yeah pretty much what everyone else is saying. It's best to not really get worked up about it. We all know the RO community is filled with leechers and you cant do anything to prevent it. People who use it and like it will most likely leave a comment.

you release it in public and and you should not ask for rep/comment. you are just pushing others to like your script by posting this, you are a good scripter, and even they wont reputate your work. like dastgir said they will remember that it was your release :no1:

Meh. I'm guilty of that myself, downloading something to take look at it (just curious, caught my eye, for future use, to see how it's done and maybe fetch a trick or two, whatever reason you can think of) and then completely forgetting about it and leaving it in my downloads folder until next time I clean it up.

...

I'm sorry to whoever I did that to, I'm just a forgetful person like that T.T

I don't think he wrote that to push others to like anything.

I think he just hoped to get more response to give something away that others notify as a contribution to the community.

I don't really see a problem with asking for a comment or a upvote to remind people, as long as it isn't extremly annyoing and begging since there are many people that would do that but just plainly tend to forget.

I mean sure, if you give something away for free, you can't really whine if people just come for that and leave, but i think if i take something for free, i could atleast thank that person. If it is possible in a quick and practical manner. Especially so in a familial environment like here on herc.ws.

I have seen many servers, who just are own by someone who don't have any experience and tell he wants x and y, and hires some (so-called) devs, and they just download and compile it in a server......

Well , this is how the RO community was and still is, though I wish it should improve ...

Well sadly that is because it is easy to basically setup a server but is hard to maintain and extend it if you have no idea of the basics how it works.

The self-assassment of people and mainstreaming of things is to blame basically.

Everyone can get a vhost and setup anything with a guide, but as soon as there is a small error or something that isn't covered by a guide they are lost.

But it is not only that people are illusive about their own knowledge and how much goes into working on some big project as a ro server, but also they get told everyhwere it actually isn't that hard so people sell more stuff.

Only if you ask in respective circles you will get told what effort goes really into working on some big project especially in it environments.

So making things look easy or making it easy to setup for people that know what they are doing opens the market for many wannabes that are actually too lazy and just want fast results or profit is basically the biggest reason for this.

I doubt as long as you can make money with ro it will change. Goldminers will still try to get big bucks for less efforts and people that don't have the knowledge will still try to do it, even if you put up a fat warning sign on every download page and a sticky on the board etc.

just Ignore the Download Count , I Hade the Same feeling when i started to release stuff here , but just ignore it and keep releasing and helping  ppls and you will get a good reputation and this also will increase the feedback you recive.

its the same with my Client Release , after checking my logs i got 544 Client Downloads in 7 Days and no one made a comment or a REP for it , but tbh i dont care it hehe

I'm not really a contributor to Hercules (or any RO emulator for that matter), but I've contributed to opensource projects before. You can't really expect any kind of appreciation/feedback for your job. But this is not the "problem" I see in projects like this one.

The problem, for me, is when the project is making money to a lot of people who couldn't really care less for the project itself. The last project I contributed to, the users started to turn the thing into a cash making machine. They'd only hang out in the forums to request new features or support. As soon as they got what they wanted. Poof. They'd vanish. So you'd have a community with a lot of users, a great deal of them making some cash with the software, and no one really giving anything back. Be it support on the forums, documentation or helping out with the bills. The guy responsible for hosting the support forum would pay for the whole thing by himself.

And that's where I draw the line. I'm cool with spending some of my free time to contribute to a software that I enjoy even if I don't get any feedback, just helping out is fun for me. But when my contributions are helping out a toxic community, I feel way less inclined to help it at all.

In a way you could also see it like this:

No news, is good news. If people would find bugs, or anything they're dissatisfied with, they WILL let you know. People aren't bothered to provide feedback if it just works, because that lies within their expectations.

So actually, getting no rep/feedback is good in a way. However, personally it won't feel good as you would like to be acknowledged for the work & effort you've put in.

Keep it up.
