while casting spiral spierce its posible to change weapon to a non-spear weapon and the skill will make the damage according to the weight of the new weapon, its been abused right now switching to a doomslayer (2handed axe) that weigths like 600.
i think is not meant to work like this or you would be able to cast that skill with any weapon.
